Common issues in Couples and Family Therapy

What to expect in Couples Therapy (and how it can help you reclaim your relationship)

It can be nerve-wracking bringing up the topic of couples therapy. Does it mean we’re in serious trouble if we decide to pursue it? Does it mean we’re on the road to divorce?

Getting help when you're having trouble communicating or feeling disconnected from each other can help you rebuild your relationship. Couples often seek therapy when they have bumps in their relationship that they have difficulty smoothing out on their own, but it doesn't have to mean that divorce is on the horizon. I approach couples therapy as a way to help you recover your relationship and rediscover a love and appreciation for your spouse.

Know that it’s not uncommon for couples to have trouble communicating, or to feel lonely or disconnected within a marriage or long-term relationship. Sometimes, as a couple, you can just get stuck. You may repeat the same argument over and over. In couples therapy, I will work with you to break those patterns. Instead of repeating the same responses that just make you feel frustrated, I will help you learn important communication techniques, and how to use those techniques to work together more effectively as parents, to trust each other more, and to achieve greater intimacy.

Benefits of seeking therapy as a couple

In therapy, we'll explore you and your partner’s vulnerabilities and emotional needs so that you can be more supportive of each other. The benefits of couples therapy can be numerous, but I’ve listed some of them out below:

  • Create a more fulfilling and nurturing relationship

  • Discover shared goals

  • Break negative patterns by making small but significant changes

  • Increase intimacy and respect

  • Increase satisfaction in and from the relationship

  • Honest and open communication

  • Learn to understand each other’s emotional needs

  • Learn positive, healthy ways to deal with conflict

As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I love working with couples to strengthen communication, respect, and trust. I can help you, or you and your partner develop the skills to start responding differently to situations that could have been triggers for relationship-damaging reactions.

Early on in therapy, couples can take away practical skills that they can apply at home to start improving your relationship. Don’t be afraid to pursue couples therapy. It doesn’t mean that your relationship is broken — it means it’s in the process of being healed and renewed. Start couples therapy in Los Gatos today and begin to learn how to handle challenging moments in ways that cultivate respectfulness, receptivity, and intimacy.
